Reading and Phonics
At Burton Morewood Primary we aim to foster a love of reading in all our children. All classes have stories appropriate to their age group read to them. Phonics is taught through discrete daily sessions. The school follows the Letters and Sounds guidance along with an online resource. Sessions are intended to be short, snappy and fun. Children in EYFS and KS1 are put into groups depending on ability, this way we can best support their individual needs. Children learn individual letter sounds, how to blend and segment, sounds represented by two or more letters e.g. ee or ch and look at alternative spellings of the same sound e.g. ou and ow.
Children read individually with many adults, this may be their class teacher, a teaching assistant or a skilled volunteer helper. The Children read books from reading schemes which have been colour banded according to levels of difficulty. Colour bands link to phonics groups, allowing appropriate support to be given.
Please keep a look eye out in our newsletters for details of up coming 'Phonics Information' sessions for parents.
